On January 2, 2007 smoking restrictions in work places and public places go into effect in the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County in order to reduce the public's exposure to harmful toxins contained in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).  This page is intended to raise awareness, assist in the implementation of the Evansville and Vanderburgh County smoke free ordinances, and includes information we hope will be useful to businesses and the general public.

The information presented on these pages is intended to assist in the implementation of the Evansville and Vanderburgh County smoke free ordinances, not as an interpretation of the ordinances.  Each ordinance is location specific; the Evansville ordinance apply to those places within the City of Evansville, while the Vanderburgh County ordinance apply to places outside the City Limits and within Vanderburgh County lines.  Compliance with the ordinances is the responsibility of everyone.  It is necessary to read and understand the ordinances in order to avoid violations.  Answers to frequently asked questions about the ordinances can be found on our Smoke Free FAQs page.

The Health Department offers a smoking cessation program for all City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County residents.  Eligibility requirements include: 18 years or older, not pregnant, smoke at least one-pack per day, obtain a doctor’s permission slip, attend four (4) one-hour classes.  A six week supply of nicotine patches are included at no cost to the participant in this program.  Contact Mary Jo Borowiecki, Health Education Supervisor at 435-5807 or mborowiecki@vanderburghgov.org to register.
