The 3rd annual Splash into Summer donation drive held on Thursday, June 1, at Walmart East and West was a huge success. Over 245 beach towels, 240 swim suits, 350 pairs of flip flops and 48 packages of swim diapers were collected. The donation drive also raised $2,222.05 in cash that will help defray the cost of cookouts to be held at city pools in June and July.
“I want to thank everyone who donated money and swim items during the Splash into Summer donation drive and the volunteers who gave their time to staff the collection sites,” said Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. “Your support means children and adults who cannot afford swimming gear and admission to a city pool will not be turned away. In addition, your generosity will make it possible for the city to provide a few extra amenities at city pools, such as shade structures.”
Cash donations and in kind donations from community supporters will make it possible for the Parks Department to host five free cookouts that will rotate to a different city pools on Saturdays during the swimming season. The first cookout will be this Saturday, June 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Garvin Pool. Cookouts will also be held at the same time on June 17 at Helfrich Pool, July 8 at Lorraine Pool, July 15 at Rochelle-Landers Pool and July 22 at Mosby Pool. A free hot dog, bag of chips, bottled drink and a cookie will be offered with each admission to the pool.
Garvin, Helfrich, Lorraine, Rochelle-Landers and Mosby pools are open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Hartke Pool hours are Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. Lloyd Pool is open daily from noon to 8 p.m. All city swimming pools meet ADA requirements.
